The giant white shark “Contender” has resurfaced. Scientists are tracking one of the Atlantic's largest predators

Scientists from the OCEARCH research organization announced that, after several months without a single signal, they have once again detected the movements of a giant white shark nicknamed Contender. This impressive male measures approximately 4.3 meters, weighs nearly 770 kilograms, and is among the largest satellite-tagged white sharks ever tracked in the Atlantic Ocean.

His reappearance presents scientists with a valuable opportunity to better understand the migration of one of the ocean’s most famous predators. Each new signal from the satellite transmitter helps create a more accurate map of great white sharks’ movements and reveals how they use different areas of the ocean throughout the year.


Months Without a Single Signal

Contender was tagged earlier this year off the coast of Florida during a scientific expedition by OCEARCH. A satellite transmitter was attached to his dorsal fin, which sends his location whenever the fin breaks the surface for a few seconds.

After being tagged, the shark did not send any signals for several months. However, this is not unusual. Great white sharks spend most of their time underwater, and the transmitter communicates with satellites only when the shark is above the water long enough.

Now, however, Contender has reappeared on the scientists’ radars, confirming that he is continuing his annual migration along the east coast of North America.

The Journey in Search of Food

Experts predict that the shark will continue toward the Cape Cod area in Massachusetts over the summer and later head as far as the waters off Atlantic Canada. It is here that large colonies of seals gather during this season, serving as the primary food source for adult great white sharks.

Migration in search of food is completely natural for this species. Every year, great white sharks travel thousands of kilometers, connecting individual marine ecosystems. Nevertheless, scientists still do not fully understand why some individuals choose different routes or what factors influence their decisions.

 

Every signal is of immense value to science


Satellite tracking allows experts to gather information that was nearly impossible to obtain just a few years ago. Thanks to this data, they can better understand migration routes, identify important breeding grounds, and locate areas where sharks are most threatened by fishing or human activity.

Such insights are crucial not only for the conservation of great white sharks but also for a better understanding of how entire marine ecosystems function. After all, apex predators play a vital role in maintaining the balance of the oceans.

Sharks Are Not Enemies

Although reports of great white sharks often spark fear, experts point out that their presence is a sign of a healthy ocean. Great white sharks do not specifically hunt humans, and most of their lives are spent far from areas where people typically swim.

Contender’s story illustrates how modern technology is changing our perspective on these fascinating creatures. Instead of sensationalist headlines, scientists today are gathering precise data that helps protect both sharks and the marine environment of which they are an indispensable part.
