More than 3 million-year-old megalodon tooth found by 11-year-old boy on beach

On a beach in New Jersey, during an ordinary family vacation, something was found that most people might have considered just an ordinary rock. However, an eleven-year-old boy walking along the shore stumbled upon a giant fossilized tooth that once belonged to one of the largest predators to ever inhabit our oceans – the megalodon.
The tooth is over 3 million years old, and according to experts, it is an exceptionally interesting find. While fossilized megalodon teeth are found quite often in some parts of the world, finds on the New Jersey coast are much rarer. What makes it even more interesting is that this time, a family came across it by complete chance during their vacation.
The boy noticed the large tooth among the rocks and sand. The family then contacted experts who identified the find as a fossilized tooth of Otodus megalodon, a giant extinct shark that lived in the oceans approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago. The tooth thus survived millions of years of geological changes and today allows us to glimpse into a world where sharks much larger than any current species roamed the oceans.
Teeth are one of the most important sources of information about the megalodon. We do not have a complete skeleton of this shark. However, like modern sharks, the megalodon constantly lost and replaced its teeth throughout its life. There could have been a huge number of them, which is why so many have been preserved to this day. After death, the soft parts of the body gradually decomposed, while the teeth, thanks to their hard mineral structure, could survive and fossilize under suitable conditions.

The megalodon was one of the largest known predators in Earth's history. Its exact maximum size is still unknown, as we do not have a complete skeleton, and scientists therefore estimate it primarily from teeth and by comparing it with the body proportions of modern sharks. Earlier estimates often cited a length of around 18 meters, but more recent research shows that the largest individuals could have been even larger. For context, a great white shark can reach a length of approximately 6 meters. The megalodon could thus have been roughly three times longer and also much more massive.
Its enormous body and powerful jaws allowed it to hunt large prey. The oceans at that time were home to the ancestors of today's whales and other large marine mammals, which likely formed a significant part of its diet. Its teeth were wide and equipped with sharp serrated edges, making them perfectly adapted for grasping and dismembering large prey. Their shape and size today help scientists reconstruct the lifestyle of this gigantic predator.
At first glance, a single fossil tooth might seem like an ordinary piece of rock. In reality, however, it can contain an enormous amount of information. From the size and shape of the tooth, the size of the shark can be estimated, its wear can tell us something about its use, and chemical analyses of the fossils can help reconstruct the environment in which the shark lived. Each such find thus adds another small piece to the puzzle that allows us to understand the life of one of the most remarkable predators in the history of the oceans.

Fossilized megalodon teeth have been found in many parts of the world. However, the New Jersey coast is interesting because marine animal fossils from a period when the environment here looked completely different from today can be preserved there. Places we know today as beaches, coastal towns, or shallow bays were once part of ancient marine ecosystems. An ordinary walk on the beach can sometimes end with a find that is older than most things we can imagine.
Although claims sometimes appear on the internet that megalodon still survives somewhere in the deep ocean, there is no scientific evidence for this. According to current knowledge, it became extinct approximately 3.6 million years ago. Its fossil teeth are therefore one of the few ways we can symbolically "meet" this giant predator today.
Thus, a single tooth is not just an interesting souvenir from the past. It is a small historical record of the life of one of the largest predators to ever live in the ocean. And this time, such a record was discovered by complete chance – during an ordinary seaside vacation.
