Havajský surfař Koa Smith při surfování na ostrově Oahu. Jen několik dní po vážném útoku žraloka oznámil, že se po zotavení plánuje vrátit zpět do oceánu.

A shark ripped off both of his legs. Yet, he announced something no one expected

The surfer headed out for the morning waves, as he had countless times before. Minutes later, he was fighting for his life after a shark attack. Yet, his reaction after the attack surprised thousands of people worldwide. The incident occurred on May 30th off Cromwell's Beach on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Experienced surfer Koa Smith was waiting for the next wave when he suddenly felt a sharp tug on his leg.

"It felt like someone grabbed my ankle and pulled as hard as they could," he later described from his hospital bed. When he turned around, he realized a shark was attacking him.

Smith suffered serious injuries to both legs. He had an approximately 25-centimeter-long open wound on one leg and a deep laceration on the other. Despite this, he managed to keep a cool head, free himself from the shark's grip, and swim to shore on his own. There, he crawled across the sand and called for help. Rescuers provided first aid on the spot and transported him to the hospital, where he underwent several surgeries. Doctors expect his full recovery within a few weeks.

According to the surfer himself, the attacker could have been an approximately 2.5-meter long Galapagos shark, although the exact species has not been officially confirmed. After the attack, warning signs were posted in the area, and authorities observed the presence of several larger sharks near popular surfing spots.

Many people would never enter the ocean again after a similar experience. However, Koa Smith announced the exact opposite. As soon as doctors allow him, he wants to return to his surfboard.

"I'll be back in the water as soon as I can," he stated during his recovery. He admitted that he would be more careful, but the ocean remains a part of his life.

This story also reminds us of an important fact. Although shark attacks attract enormous media attention, such incidents are extremely rare. Millions of people spend time in the ocean every year without a single encounter with a shark. Moreover, most species do not consider humans as prey.

Koa Smith's story is therefore not just a story about a shark attack. It is primarily a story of courage, determination, and respect for the ocean, which he did not lose even after such a dramatic experience.
