The thresher shark is one of the most easily recognizable shark species thanks to its exceptionally long upper lobe of the caudal fin, which can account for up to half its body length. It uses this unique tail like a whip to stun schools of fish before catching them. It inhabits temperate and tropical waters around the world and feeds primarily on sardines, mackerel, herring, and squid. It is a fast and agile swimmer that spends most of its life in the open ocean. Although it grows to impressive sizes, it is harmless to humans. Today, its population is threatened primarily by overfishing and bycatch, which is why it is classified as a vulnerable species.
