Great white shark
Carcharodon carcharias
The great white shark is one of the most well-known and largest predatory sharks in the world. It inhabits the temperate and subtropical waters of all oceans, where, as an apex predator, it helps maintain a healthy balance in marine ecosystems. It can be recognized by its robust body, grey back, and white belly, which provides it with natural camouflage during hunting. It is equipped with powerful jaws featuring serrated teeth that are continuously replaced throughout its life. Young individuals primarily hunt fish and rays, while adults mainly target seals, sea lions, and other marine mammals.
Although often considered a dangerous predator, humans are not its natural prey. Most incidents are rare and related to mistaken identity or curious exploration. Today, the great white shark is threatened primarily by overfishing, bycatch, and slow reproduction rates, which is why it is listed as a protected species in many parts of the world.

Zajímavosti
🦭 Adults primarily specialize in seals and sea lions, while juveniles mainly hunt fish.🌡️ They are among the few shark species that can maintain a body temperature higher than the surrounding water, allowing them to move faster.
🚀 When hunting, they can accelerate to over 40 km/h.
🐬 They can jump several meters above the surface, especially when attacking seals. This phenomenon is called breaching.
👃 They can detect blood and other chemicals in the water from a great distance thanks to an extraordinarily sensitive sense of smell.
⚡ Using ampullae of Lorenzini, they perceive weak electrical fields generated by prey.
🦷 They can replace thousands of teeth during their lifetime.
🧭 Some individuals undertake migrations thousands of kilometers across oceans.
🎬 The film Jaws made them famous, significantly contributing to public fear of sharks, even though the actual behavior of this species is much more complex and less dangerous than depicted in the film.
🌍 As an apex predator, it helps maintain healthy populations of marine animals and is one of the most important species for the functioning of oceanic ecosystems.
