Tiger shark
Galeocerdo cuvier
The tiger shark is one of the largest and most well-known shark species in the world. It inhabits tropical and subtropical oceans, where it can be found in coastal waters, around coral reefs, and in the open sea. It gets its name from the dark stripes on the bodies of young individuals, which resemble a tiger's fur. These stripes gradually fade with age. Thanks to its powerful jaws and serrated teeth, it can hunt a wide range of prey – from fish and rays to sea turtles, whose shells it can crush without difficulty. Although it is associated with attacks on humans, humans are not its natural prey. The tiger shark is an important apex predator that helps maintain the balance of marine ecosystems. Today, its population is primarily threatened by overfishing and bycatch.

Zajímavosti
🐯 Tiger Stripes – Young sharks have distinct dark stripes and spots along their sides resembling a tiger's coat. As they age, these stripes gradually fade.🗑️ "Ocean Scavenger" Nickname – Tiger sharks will eat almost anything. License plates, tires, cans, plastic wrappers, and parts of fishing gear have been found in their stomachs. However, this doesn't mean they seek these items out; they usually swallow them by mistake while hunting.
🐢 Sea Turtle Specialist – Thanks to their very strong jaws, they can crush the hard shells of sea turtles, a feat few other predators can accomplish.
🌙 Most Active After Dark – Although they also hunt during the day, their greatest activity occurs at night and dusk.
🦷 Serrated Teeth – Their teeth have pronounced serrations, allowing them to easily cut through flesh, cartilage, and bone.
🌍 Lives Almost Worldwide – They inhabit tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, often moving close to the coast.
🧭 Great Traveler – Some individuals travel thousands of kilometers annually in search of food or more suitable water temperatures.
👶 Gives Birth to Live Young – A female can give birth to approximately 10 to 80 pups, which is one of the largest litters among sharks.
👁️ Excellent Senses – When hunting, they use not only their sense of smell and sight but also their lateral line and ampullae of Lorenzini, which can detect weak electrical signals emitted by prey.
⚠️ Apex Predator – The tiger shark is one of the ocean's most significant apex predators. It helps maintain healthy marine animal populations and the balance of the entire ecosystem.
